Who is Jagdish Wagh?

Jagdish Wagh is the fictional protagonist of the novel: a builder from Dombivli whose career spans small residential contracts, large redevelopment work, and the civic arguments that come with both. He belongs to the CKP community, and the book uses his family's history to frame questions about inheritance, obligation and what a city owes the people who build it. He is not a real person, and no living builder is described or implied. Character overview

Born in Dombivli in 1958 to a mill clerk and a schoolteacher, Jagdish Wagh qualifies as a civil engineer in 1979 and founds Wagh Infrastructure in 1986. His reputation rests less on scale than on which jobs he accepts: the plots with bad ground, contested paperwork or difficult neighbours, taken on the reasoning that nobody else is bidding. It is his advantage for twenty years and his trap after that.

Role in the story

He is the point of view through which the novel examines Dombivli’s growth, the ethics of redevelopment, and the pressure a changing city puts on the people inside it. His working life and his family life are told as one story — his daughter Aditi becomes an urban planner and ends up opposite him at the table, and his son Nikhil leaves the business for reasons the novel declines to give.

The turn

Two decisions bracket his career. In 1991 he refuses the creek-side plot the novel calls Site 14, and the refusal becomes the thing everyone knows about him. In 2008 he takes it. The Shivaji Chowk redevelopment sits between them, and the fourteen months it ran late are what the second half of the book argues about.
